WILLIAM H. SNED, JR. Chairman, Board of Trustees
January, 2009
Dear Friend,
This is an exciting time at the Norton Museum of Art, for we have the rare opportunity to present two major exhibitions back- to-back.
We begin January 25 with Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: Natural Affinities. This celebration of the American landscape by the two seminal American artists features 40 paintings by O’Keeffe and 54 photographs by Adams.
Just two weeks later, on February 6,we open Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism. This selection of works from the renowned Brooklyn Museum collection presents 40 of the best examples of Impressionist landscape painting by French masters like Monet, Pissarro and Courbet and their most important American disciples, John Singer Sargent and Childe Hassam among them.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am delighted to invite you to become a member of the Norton Museum of Art and enjoy these two major exhibitions as only a member can.
By joining the Norton, you will enjoy special opportunities to enhance your experience of Natural Affinities and Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism, including free tickets, an express admissions line reserved for members, and discounts at the Museum Store that will feature specialty items related to the two exhibitions.
One of the highlight opportunities is our Director’s Reception and Private Viewing for the Natural Affinitiesand Landscapesexhibitions, to be held on March 26 and reserved for members only.
On that Thursday afternoon, you’ll have the pleasure of meeting trustees, Museum staff and other Norton members, and taking a private tour of the two exhibitions, led by their respective curators. There will be music and gourmet refreshments and the opportunity to use your 10% member discount on all merchandise in the Museum Shop.
In Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: Natural Affinities, you will explore how these two American icons utilized color and tone to express their singular visions of beauty in nature. Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism will give you a broad survey of mid-19th-through early-20th century French and American landscape paintings by some of the leading Impressionists in France and the U.S.
Throughout your membership year, you can take advantage of special member benefits and privileges like unlimited free admission to the Museum’s world-class collections and visiting exhibitions. Members also receive complimentary tickets to all exhibitions that charge admission to the general public.
I know that you will want to return again this spring to see Roman Vishniac: Selections from The Vanished World. Opening March 7, this important exhibition chronicles life in the Jewish Villages and ghettos of central and Eastern Europe between 1935 and 1939. Lighter fare comes in June with the opening of Disney: The Music Behind the Magic 1928-Today.
As additional member benefits, all of your purchases at the Museum Store are discounted 10% , or even 20% when you visit the Store on Member Appreciation Days. Many of the sale items are related to the Museum’s permanent collections or special exhibitions on view.
To help you make the most of your visits to the Norton, we’ll give you advance notification of our educational programs, concerts, special events and other Museum activities. You also enjoy free subscriptions to the Norton Museum Members Magazine and the monthly members’ e-newsletter, as well as reduced-rate subscriptions to art, architecture and design magazines.
To thank you for joining now, we want you to have a special gift – a set of fine art postcards bound in Norton Museum ribbon, with our compliments.
If you join at a higher membership level, we have more exclusive benefits and thank you gifts for you. Members at the $125 Supporter level receive a stylish Norton Museum of Art tote bag. At the $250 Contributor level, your free gift is an exhibition poster suitable for framing.
I do hope you will accept the trustees’ invitation to join the Museum for 2009. With Natural Affinities and Landscapes opening shortly, this is, indeed, an exciting time to be a member of the Norton Museum of Art.
Sincerely,
William H. Sned, Jr.
